Renowned religious scholar Karen Armstrong dreamed of a more compassionate world. In 2008 she reached out to leaders of faiths and traditions around the world to craft a defining vision of what a compassionate world could be.
The result, the Charter for Compassion, has been affirmed globally by over 70 cities, including St. Augustine, Florida. Fernandina Beach joins over 300 cities having Compassion Initiatives leading to full Charter membership.

From the Charter for Compassion
… We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity.
